The School of Computing and Data Science (CDS) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) brought a slice of mathematical fun to its Shanghai site on 13 March with “Get Your π of Pie — A Slice of Happy Friday at CDS (Shanghai),” a lively community event celebrating the upcoming International Pi Day (on 14 March).
The π Day celebration brought together around 230 students—including undergraduates from the week-long AILT1001 Artificial Intelligence Literacy course and postgraduate students from the Delta X Programme—for a well-deserved break filled with games, laughter, and plenty of pie.
Three interactive game booths formed the highlight of the event, each designed around the meaning of π. The Blind Circle Challenge invited students to draw circles blindfolded, connecting directly to π as the constant ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The π Memory Challenge encouraged participants to recite as many digits of π as possible, highlighting its famous infinite, non-repeating decimal sequence starting from 3.14. The Ring Toss reimagined a classic game with circular rings and targets, echoing the fundamental shape at the heart of π.
CDS (Shanghai) brings together undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral researchers to cultivate future leaders equipped with fundamental knowledge and skills to navigate and shape the future technological landscape between Hong Kong and Shanghai. This expansion reflects CDS’s commitment to fostering not only academic excellence but also a vibrant, connected community across all levels of study.
