HKU Team Won Pioneer Award at FinTech80 Chengdu Hackathon 2023

HKU Team, Apollo, won the Pioneer Award (領先者獎) at the sixth FinTech80 Chengdu Hackathon (「成都八零」全球金融科技產品設計與研發大賽」) 2023 held in Chengdu from October 27 - November 3, 2023.

Chengdu80 2023 is a FinTech design and development competition co-organized by Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) and Chengdu Jiaozi Financial Holding Group (成都交子金融控股集團). Eight teams from international and local mainland universities including Tsinghua University, ETH Surich, Queen's University of Canada, The University of Hong Kong and National University of Singapore, etc were invited to participate in the final competition.

All teams were given the same problem (analysing online real-time news and predict the effects on stocks) and were given 80 hours to design and implement the prototype of a proposed solution.

The HKU "Apollo" team, which was coached by Professor Siu-Ming YIU, comprised of:

  • Shah Jahan ISHAQ - BEng(CompSc), Year 2
  • Muhammad HUSSAIN - BSc(ActuarSc), Year 2
  • Muhammad MUBEEN - BEng(CE), Year 4)
  • Dorjderem NAMSRAIJAV - BEng(CompSc), Year 2
  • CHEUNG Tsz Wing - BEng(CompSc), Year 2

Professor Yiu was very pleased with the team's performance and said, "I am very proud of my team. While other teams have master/PhD students, the members of our HKU team are all undergraduate students (most of them are Year 2 students except one in Year 4). They did very well in the prototype and also the presentation. I was amazed by their work that within only 80 hours, they were able to create new and effective algorithms (with backtest on large volume of data) for detecting fake news and evaluating scores for the news, etc."

Congratulations to our HKU team again for their outstanding achievements!
