Our students win first runner-up of ACM International Programming Contest

We are pleased to report that our HKU team have won the first runner-up of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (Asia Regional) held in Taipei on November 6--7, 2004. They have beaten strong competitors such as Tsinghua University and University of Tokyo, as well as all other teams from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Our winning team consisted of Tse Chi Yung (ISSE4), Tam Siu Lung (PG) and Liu Chi Man (CSIS2). Because of the difficulty of the problems, the average number of problems solved by all teams was about 3.16. Our team conquered a total of 7 problems out of 10 within 779 minutes. They were the first group that managed to solve problems 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. They were in the leading position for more than 80% of the time of the competition. The team from Shanghai Jiaotong University took over them by solving their 8th problem in the very last hour, using a total of 1197 minutes for all problems.

Our second team with members Chan Man Hon (CE3), Lam Pak Shu (ISSE3) and Pang Wing Pan (CSIS2) solved 5 problems in 862 minutes. They won the 5th place of the competition. The best team from CUHK solved the same number of problems in 1088 minutes.

An honourable mention is our freshly built third team consisting of Lee Lap Kei (PG), Kwan Wing Shing (ISSE3) and Tang Cho Yin (CS1).

Let us heartily congratulate and thank the outstanding HKU teams as well as Dr K.W. Chong of our Department, who served as the coach. We also acknowledge the full financial support by the Department for the teams' trips to Taipei.

Incidentally, our previous teams also won the second runner-up of the same competition in 2002, 2001 and 2000. Keep up with the good work!
