207 students from 36 Hong Kong secondary schools participated in the 14th Canadian Computing Competition (Hong Kong Contest) held on March 8, 2018 at the Department of Computer Science of The University of Hong Kong (HKU). The award presentation ceremony was held on March 29 honoring 59 elites for their remarkable performance in the contest. Certificates were presented to the awardees by Professor Norman Tien, Dean of Engineering of HKU, Professor T.W. Lam, Head of Computer Science Department of HKU, and Mr. John Huen, CEO of Let's Code and Koding Kingdom.
The top 2 Stage 1 senior level finishers, Li Kwing Hei from Diocesan Boys' School, and Wai Ka Hei from Pui Ching Middle School, will be awarded an "all-expenses-paid" trip to Canada to take part in the Stage 2 contest to be held in May 2018 at the University of Waterloo. Special thanks for Professor Francis C.M. Lau, the program advisor, Dr. C.K. Chui and Dr. Heming Cui, the program executives, and Mr. Li Tsz On, the program coordinator. And also to Mr. G. Mitcheson, Dr. K.P.Chan, Dr. T.W.Chim, Dr. D. Schnieders and Dr. Vincent Tam for designing the questions.
The Canadian Computing Competition began in Canada in 1996, and was brought to Hong Kong by Professor Francis C.M. Lau in 2005 with the aim of promoting programming among Hong Kong students. Since then, this competition becomes an influential knowledge exchange activity in the Department of Computer Science of HKU. In the past 14 years, this competition attracted more than 1000 students from over 50 Hong Kong secondary schools joining the Hong Kong Contest. Also, the number of female awardees in the Hong Kong contest also reaches new heights in 2018.
