Tak-Wah Lam as New Head of Department of Computer Science

Professor Tak-Wah Lam has been appointed as Head of the Department of Computer Science from January 1, 2018 for three years. Professor Lam joined HKU in 1988 and was one of the founding teaching staff when the Department of Computer Science was formally established under the Faculty of Engineering in the same year. He has been serving as the Chair of the Departmental Curriculum Development Committee for more than 10 years since 2006, and was one of the Associate Deans of the Faculty of Engineering from 2001 to 2006.

Professor Lam loves teaching. His passion for teaching brought him numerous teaching awards including the Department's Teaching Excellence Award for 7 times during 1996-2013, the Faculty Best Teacher Award in 2005, the Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award (individual) in 2014, and the HKU Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award in 2009.

Professor Lam is an established researcher focusing on the design and analysis of algorithms for different applications, and has published extensively in many prestigious international conferences and journals. He was awarded the Research Output Prize in Engineering twice in 2005 and 2016. Apart from theoretical work, he is also keen on collaborating with the genomics industry on applying some latest data structures and algorithms to build advanced software tools for bioinformatics.
