Arrest of Online Copyright Infringer Using LMS-1 Plus Jointly Developed by HK Customs and Excise Department and HKU Center for Information Security and Cryptography

Recently, the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) arrested suspect accused of online copyright infringement by using "Lineament Monitoring System I plus (LMS-I Plus)" jointly developed with the Center for Information Security and Cryptography (CISC) at HKU.

LMS-1 Plus is a system automatically patrols popular discussion forums and detects suspected intellectual property infringement activities by sharing files through cyber-lockers. This system was completed early this year and has been in full operation since July 2014. LMS-1 Plus is able to track down the pirate who uploaded the files to cyber-lockers and save copy of all related evidence. This is the first time C&ED using LMS-1 Plus to catch a suspected copyright infringer. Custom officers arrested the 40-year-old-suspect and confiscated two computers loaded with a large amount of comics, local and overseas films, and TV dramas from Hong Kong and Japan which the suspect distributed on Internet discussion forums.

LMS-1 Plus saves manpower and improves forensic analysis accuracy. This system greatly increases the effectiveness of C&ED in fighting online copyright infringement activities on file sharing through cyber-lockers.
