Three CS Final Year Students Receive Apple WWDC 2011 Student Scholarship
Three BEng(CompSc) final year students, Ray LO Ho Nam, Godfrey LOI Wai Hong and Bruce KAU Chun Kit are awarded the Apple Student Scholarship for attending the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) held in San Francisco from June 6‑10, 2011.
The project submitted for applying the Apple scholarship is their final year project supervised by Dr. Vincent Lau. It is an iPhoneApp, named "DictTake" which uses the phone camera to capture image of texts, have them translated into a different language and further linked them to related online information. They believe that the idea of their project will be beneficial to the community, including but not limited to students, visitors and even people with vision impairment.
Ray, Godfrey and Bruce also work closely with the Hong Kong Society for the Blind in a related project which is supported by the Development of Assistive Technology for Persons with Disabilities Fund. This project named "Transense ‑ Mobile camera based text reader" is targeted to develop an iPhone/iPad application for the blind by using the phone camera to scan and convert texts (English or Chinese) into English, Cantonese or Putonghua speech.
