Our students' voices

Ms. Liang Yuzhi (Graduate 2010)

I am now working at the University of Hong Kong as a Research Engineer after graduation, and hope to go on to doctoral studies.

It was not easy adjusting to a new environment and almost a new learning medium in English after living and growing up in Mainland China, but I believed I managed after a few months. Working on group assignments with other students was also useful, as we could help one another and got to know one another. I did not apply for the China Postgraduate Scholarships for PRC students as the agent in China who handled my application did not think that I would have a chance. I wish I had tried. I can now speak quite fluent Cantonese and I even got a chance to stand in as a teaching assistant on one module last year!

Mr. Xie Yifan (Graduate 2010)

First of all, I was attracted to the University of Hong Kong because of its international academic reputation, so I decided to apply to join the Programme. As an only child of hard-working parents, I fully realized that I must work very hard to justify their financial investment in me, and I am pleased to say that I have not disappointed them. I believe working this past year in Hong Kong and learning all about network security, cyber crimes, etc., will give me an edge over others when I return to work in China. Coming to study at this University has broadened my view and I now have a better first-hand understanding what the world is like outside Mainland China.

Mr. Choi Hon Wa (Graduate 2011)

As an information technology professional, we are always expected to be ready to provide prompt support to our business colleagues who wish to adapt to the globalization of the world economy through the use of new technologies. However, this has also presented a challenge to us to continue learning, and to improve our abilities. For this reason, HKU's MSc(CS) is the best place for the working professionals' to return to school on a part-time basis.

The Intranet of the programme provides me with the lecture recordings, if I have to miss a lesson because of an unavoidable business trip, and the course email and newsgroup are the best communication channels between the lecturer, tutor and students.

Besides, the well designed assignments are all divided into different phases, it is helpful for the part-time student to handle the school work step-by-step and understand the content in a better and more systematic way.

Lastly, the teams from the Program Office of MSc(CS) & MSc(ECom&IComp) are my best partner in HKU. They are always with me and give me all-round support on any student matters, especially for those cumbersome issues on course selection and enrolment! With their help, I can fully focus on my study to complete the master course on time.

Mr. C.K. Lee (Graduate 2011)

The programme is challenging and tough to complete and you don’t always get the high marks you expect for your assignments. However, it is no doubt that it will enhance your future career, not just because of the degree title, Master of Science in Computer Science from one of the leading universities in the world; not just because of the cutting-edge technologies in the varied computer/IT disciplines you will learn; but also because of the problem solving and learning skills which we acquire through the multiple learning process. Those are very precious skills which the teachers arm us with besides imparting subject knowledge.

Mr. Chow Kwong Pok (Graduate 2011)

Choosing the HKU MSc(CompSc) programme is a right choice for me not only to further develop my computational knowledge, it is also a rich channel for me to explore the newest technologies. The programme curriculum design is comprehensive and well-structured. I am therefore able to enrol in courses according to my interests and strengths from six widely different areas. In addition, my professors and teachers are experienced in many aspects, always providing many innovative opinion and professional guidance in order to advise me on problem solving and critical thinking. Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about my favourite: the 4-module project, which to me is a great and practical platform to learn how to conduct research. It is a good capstone experience for me to make use of the integration of knowledge, which I have learnt, to apply on a particular project. Studying in MSc(CompSc) has been an enjoying experience in my life.
